Essential Ingredients for Healthy Hair :

One of the key ingredients related to hair is Aloe vera. It has been used for centuries for its healing properties. It’s a plant that has thick leaves with a gel-like substance inside of them. It’s found all over the world, and many people even grow in their backyard gardens.

Aloe vera is a popular product that people use on their skin after sun exposure. This is because of its high collagen content and cooling properties. The vitamin content in aloe vera suggests that it might work to repair sun damage to your hair, too.

Aloe vera contains vitamins like A, C, and E. All three of these vitamins contribute to cell turnover, promoting healthy cell growth and shiny hair. It also contains Vitamin B12 and folic acid that can keep your hair from falling out. However, there are no studies that confirm conclusively that aloe vera has any benefit in preventing hair loss.

Rubbing aloe vera into your scalp and letting it penetrate your hair follicles could condition and improve damaged, dry hair. And it also cleanses the hair shaft efficiently, stripping off extra sebum (oil) and residue from other hair products. But aloe vera doesn’t hurt your hair strands while it cleans. Unlike other chemicals in hair products, aloe vera is gentle and preserves the integrity of your hair. Using aloe vera is a great way to get hair that looks healthier, shinier, and softer.

When your scalp has been cleansed and your hair has been conditioned with aloe vera, you might see that hair breakage and loss slows down.

There are plenty of people who claim that aloe vera actually causes hair to grow much faster. But as of now, there’s little clinical evidence to prove or disprove those claims.

Hand extracting coconut oil into a bowl, ideal for natural skincare routines.

Coconut oil, another commonly found ingredient in our homes which is essential for hair.

Studies have shown coconut oil to have the following properties:

  • It is a good moisturiser and prevents moisture loss from your scalp. It helps in reducing split ends and frizzy hair.
  • Anti-microbial properties, due to the presence of lauric acid in coconut oil, allows it to possibly be a dandruff remedy.
  • Applying it to the scalp can reduce inflammation and pain caused by itching or any other treatment done before.
  • Contains proteins and Vitamin E, that allows it to help in strengthening your hair follicles.

Scalp TLC (Tender Loving Care) : The Foundation of Growth

Apart from these homemade hair masks, the next important thing for our scalp is the massages and nourishment. One of the most popular benefits of a scalp massage is that it relieves stress and decreases the feelings of anxiety. It aids in many other benefits like :

  • Promotes relaxation, Hair massage can help to release pent-up tension in the muscles and promote feelings of relaxation and calmness.
  • Promotes hair growth, By increasing blood flow and circulation to the hair follicles, scalp massage helps to bring more nutrients and oxygen to the roots of the hair.
  • Removes build-up, Scalp massage can help to remove build-up from the scalp, which can promote a healthier scalp and hair. This can be anything from dirt, dust, debris, hair oils and product leftovers.
  • Alleviate headaches, By targeting pressure points on the scalp, hair massage can help to relieve tension and reduce pain associated with headaches and migraines.
  • Over-washing can strip your hair of its natural oils, so try to shampoo only 2-3 times a week. When you do, use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo  and lukewarm water. Avoid harsh scrubbing and towel-drying, opting for a soft microfiber towel instead. (pro tip – when you buy a shampoo, look out for shampoos that doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulphate, as its very harmful for our hair follicles)

So, the next time you feel stressed, treat your scalp to some extra love and see the difference.

Nutritional Boost for Hair Health :

Some of the commonly available foods are :

  •  Eggs : Eggs contain various proteins that boost collagen production. Increased collagen synthesis improves the strength and thickness of hair. They also contain biotin, an essential part of the hair and its intake enhances hair growth

  •  Green Leafy Vegetables : Green leafy vegetables are a rich source of iron, an essential mineral in the body that carries oxygen and nutrients. Due to low levels of iron, hair follicles do not get enough nutrients, which hampers hair growth and weakens hair strands

  •  Vitamin C-Rich Citrus Fruits : Citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, and grapefruits are a rich source of vitamin C. Berries are also a rich source of Vitamin C.  Vitamin C protects hair follicles from the oxidative damage of free radicals.

  • Seeds and Nuts : Nuts, including almonds, walnut seeds, pumpkin seeds, and flax seeds, carry numerous health benefits for hair. They contain a high amount of Omega-3 fatty acids, which increase the thickness of hair by keeping it hydrated and making it strong. Nuts and seeds also contain zinc, promoting hair health by increasing cell reproduction and improving immunity

  • Carrots : Carrots are a rich source of vitamin A, which has numerous benefits for your hair. Vitamin A is essential for the growth of body cells, including hair. This makes it a perfect food for hair growth faster. It also enhances sebum production in the scalp, which keeps the hair hydrated and healthy.

Mistakes to Avoid in DIY Hair Care

Some common pitfalls and solutions :

Some hair masks may not be suitable to you and probably damage your scalp and hair.

  • Patch test : I agree that DIYs for hair masks are great but most of us are not doing any patch test.
  • You’re not diluting your strong ingredients : Let’s say when you use essentials like tea tree oil, rosemary oil etc. these are all great for hair masks but you need to dilute them with some carrier oils to avoid any side effects like burns, itchy scalp and sometimes hairfall too. (as some people may have sensitive scalp)
  • Using ingredients which aren’t working for your hair : everybody wishes to include some natural ingredients in your hair masks. But the catch is some ingredients which we use in hair masks may not be working for most hair types, so we need to be thoroughly checking what’s our hair type and which ingredients suit.
  • Too often and aggressive with massages : we all know that massages lead to blood circulation inturn promotes hair growth but it should be restricted to once or twice a week. Being more aggressive with massaging will only lead to hair fall, so be careful. A gentle massage is always preferred over rubbing the scalp.

Bonus Tips:

  • Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on your hair.
  • Minimize heat styling and let your hair air dry whenever possible.
  • Trim split ends regularly to prevent breakage and promote healthy growth.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and keep your scalp healthy.

Remember : Consistency is key ! These DIY secrets work best when used regularly. Be patient, enjoy the process, and soon you’ll be flaunting strong, healthy hair that’s all your own.
